While I was in Pittsburgh I spent some time experi While I was in Pittsburgh I spent some time experiencing the installations at the @mattressfactory my favorites where the @jamesturell works, I didn’t want to leave Pleiades when my 15 mins were up, I also was captivated by @shohei_katayama_ ship hull in the basement, the @greer_lankton_archives_museum work was also a treat and of course I took the obligatory Yayoi Kusama IG shot. Holley I get to do a residency at this museum someday. I would love to develop #freeyourmind further in this space Pittsburgh really needs to address its discrimination problem. Outside the confines of the art communities I interacted with, It is not a welcoming city for women of color #isaidwhatisaid #artistlife #pittsburgh

This week join me at @pghkids to learn free-form w This week join me at @pghkids to learn free-form weaving, coiling, knotting techniques during a hands-on drop-in workshop with me. @misstheda has meticulously collected fibers donated by the community to create a bold wig inspired by Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton. The fibers are transformed by their collective memory, becoming a “social fabric” that weaves together contemporary issues and personal narratives, particularly the artist’s own experiences with people touching or making comments about her hair. During the workshop, Theda Sandiford will create a safe space for participants to share and consider stereotypes in their own lives as well as the lives of others. This manifests differently for each of us. Some of us push shopping carts of pain while some of us carry a backpack. How we choose to handle our baggage makes a difference. We have the choice to let it define us or to let it go, move forward as a form of active resistance. My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma inflicted by Karens & Kens. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, zip ties, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, bottle caps and even Barbies.
