These vessels hold more than just knowledge; they cradle the stories, traditions, and remedies that define who we are. From oral histories to ancient practices, each scroll preserves a piece of our identity and experience.
As I delve deeper into understanding our environment, ecosystems, and sustainable practices, I’m reminded of the profound connection between humanity and nature. Reposting • @newvisionarymag Theda Sandiford is an installation artist who works primarily with fiber and found materials, ranging from zip ties, ribbon, and vintage neckties to recycled fishing nets and shopping carts. The objects she doesn’t find herself are contributed by her community; she binds them together using freeform weaving, knotting, and wrapping techniques, making the metaphor of “social fabric” literal. @misstheda⁠

In Theda Sandiford’s latest installation, Ponytails and Door Knocker Earrings, the artist explores the intricate relationship between personal identity, cultural heritage, and the profound significance of hair. Using the curved wall of 55 Fifth Avenue, Sandiford hangs a series of rope structures made from ribbons, mixed media yarn, trim, beads, and cotton rope knotted onto a gold spray painted bamboo ring – many of the ribbons gifted by her grandmother before her passing in 1990.

Coming out of Surface Design Conference, I was ins

Coming out of Surface Design Conference, I was inspired by the use of organic materials by several conference presenters. This past month, I’ve been foraging mahogany seed pods all over St Croix. After washing the pods, I seal them with a matte medium and water slurry and then set them aside to dry. With every batch, I think I have enough only to realize I still need more seed pods for the tapestry I have in mind for this work currently in progress. More to come #wip

A second cleaning and processing and these fibers will be ready to use in my soft sculptures. I often see a warps embedded in industrial design. When I got rid of an old broken down beverage fridge, I held onto the shelves, just in case… Today, while looking for something else in my studio, I found the shelves and was compelled to weave some rope cordage I made last year onto the shelf. I never did find what I was looking for, this moment of serendipity is what happened instead
