Last Chance to View Ponytails & Door Knocker Earrings

Elaborate strands of rope, meticulously wrapped, woven, tied, and adorned with recycled beads, zip ties, ribbon, lace, tape, and bells beckon you toward a vibrant installation that visually represents natural hair. These daring and playful sculptures delicately encourage viewers to engage in unconventional dialogues surrounding microaggressions, stereotypes, and implicit bias specifically faced by Black women embracing our natural hair.

This installation invites you to explore and reflect on the complexities of identity and beauty standards. Each piece tells a story of resilience and pride, challenging societal norms and sparking meaningful conversations. By engaging with these sculptures, viewers are encouraged to confront their own biases and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and struggles of Black women.

Me and My Ponytails Thank You!

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible turnout at the opening of “Ponytails and Door Knocker Earrings” in the Time Equities Building. Seeing so many people come out to support my work was truly humbling, and I am deeply appreciative of each and every person who took the time to attend. Especially in the dead of winter on the coldest day of the year in NYC, so far.

I want to extend a special thank you to Natalie Kates from Kate Ferres Project for her invaluable introduction to the curator, Tessa Ferreyros. Natalie’s support and guidance have been instrumental in helping me navigate the art world, and I am endlessly grateful for her friendship and mentorship.

I also want to express my gratitude to Tessa Ferreyros for curating this exhibition, Bryce Grates for her installation logistics planning and to Time Equities Inc. (TEI) Art-in-Buildings for sponsoring it. It is an honor to have my work displayed, and I am thrilled to be a part of this collaboration.

“Ponytails and Door Knocker Earrings” will be on display until July 1, 2024, the lobby is open to the public 24 hours a day. Thank you again to everyone who came out to support me. I will share more when the artist talk has been locked in…

PEOPLE PLACE DISRUPTION

I was blown away how the choreographers and dancers used my Ponytails and Door Knocker Earrings as if it is another dancer in their work.

I love how the video was shot and edited. My hair totems have been truly brought to life.

Watch to see for yourself.

The gallery exhibition of PEOPLE PLACE DISRUPTION will be up at the Nimbus Arts Center on Sundays from 11am – 2pm with 20 minute reservable spots through May 22 : https://ppdgallery.eventbrite.com
