Collective Resilience

Free Your Mind is a collective expression of resilience, a visual testament to the shared experiences of individuals who have faced microaggressions.

It is through this communal act of storytelling, participants find catharsis and the opportunity to reclaim a sense of agency.

Liberate Your Mind: Unleashing the Power of Freedom

Free Your Mind transcends the traditional boundaries of art, becoming a dynamic force for social change.

It not only creates a space for dialogue but actively works towards dismantling the structures that perpetuate microaggressions.

By giving a voice to the marginalized and fostering empathy and awareness, this public textile art endeavor stands as a testament to the transformative power of art in the pursuit of genuine social change.

Share a story about a microaggression you have experienced.

How did it make you feel?

PLEASE SHARE >>>HERE

2024 Free Your Mind will be on display at:

  • Touchstone Center for Arts, Farmington PA from May 17 – September 20
  • Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE from June 7 – August 30

I’m the 2023-204 Discover Space Invitational Artist

I am excited to share that I am The Delaware Contemporary’s 2023-24 Discover Space Invitational Artist. Workshop and artist talk schedule to follow

Free Your Mind; will be installed in the Discover Space, The Delaware Contemporary accompanied by seasonal programming to drive audience engagement utilizing multiple modalities to interact with this project. Visitors connect and find meaning through active experience.

Free Your Mind is a collection of personal narratives. Participants are invited to share a personal experience with implicit bias to release this story from their personal narrative. Shared statements are later converted from text to speech and played back in the installation environment.  Motion sensors trigger recordings and text projections that intensify as participants move closer toward the blanket of ribbons.

I make my own world…

My social practice builds community through conversation about shared experiences… via story ribbons tied to a net.

Free Your Mind focuses on exposing microaggressions. The community is invited to share a personal experience with bias to release this interaction from their personal narrative.

So far more than 5000 story ribbons have been collected.

Triggered Truth & Transformation

Despite the growing commitment to racial equity, the day-to-day experiences of women of color have not improved. Women of color face similar types and frequencies of microaggressions as they did before the BLM.

The weight of these triggers underpins very real consequences… stress, anger, frustration, self-doubt and ultimately feelings of powerlessness and invisibility. These triggers come with a hefty toll of emotional baggage.

Extensions of rope, wrapped, knotted, woven, and embellished with recycled textiles, zip ties, ribbon and yarn, gingerly invite the audience into off the-wall conversations about the “respectability politics” of black hair.  My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels for this racial trauma.  The act of making, weaves the sting of daily microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints.

Join the conversation.
