Apply for and Win a grant to further develop, I Am My Hair Art Workshop. I want to take my workshop to Atlanta, Nashville and Austin. And create a catalog documenting the stories and people who participate in the workshop.
I live art-ed making a Vision Board at SXSW in 2007 (I think that was the year). I want to up the ante and run I Am My Hair workshop at SXSW in 2021. I need help capturing video of me working in studio and editing a clip I can submit as part of a multimedia application for SXSW Art Program 2021. Any volunteers? I showed for the very first time in Jersey City during Little Wonders at LITM way back in the early 2000s. It was the first time I showed my cut and paste collages. Curator Andrea Morin encouraged me to do more, I have been showing during Little Wonders ever since.

I have reread the email congratulating me for winning “NOW•FRIENDS ; Artist Residency, Kenya 100 times and it is just now starting to sink in.
I’m going to Kenya in July 2020! Returning to Kenya for the first time since my junior year abroad in 1990. Whoa!
NOW FRIENDS ; Artist Residency, Kenya gives an artist the opportunity to immerse themselves in real communities and obtain authentic experiences. During the 2-week residency artists are encouraged to step out of what they would typically consider their work.
While in Residency, I plan to work with community members on a collaborative project weaving hair from local textiles and found materials. I also plan to visit other artists working in Kenya. Please send artist suggestions.
I look forward to meeting new friends and seeing how my work becomes influenced by my time in Kenya. I can’t wait to go textile and bead shopping.

A group exhibition of interdisciplinary artists’ projects that include a range of work including painting, sculpture, installations, site specific projects, and video projections. “gravity[tional]” is an exhibition that considers the OBJECT or noun definition, as well as the DESCRIPTIVE or adjective definition of the word GRAVITY or GRAVITATIONAL. Valverde makes use of the duality of the word to introduce select works of art made in response to the (adjective) severity or seriousness of a cause, political stance, protest, OR (noun) works of art made intently considering the physical qualities of materials and space, including weight, structure and innate or perceived forces of those materials. Through this exhibition and project space, Valverde brings together selected works by established and emerging artists that present the conceptual theme of “gravity[tional]”.
